I loved reading this - thank you. I have long been thinking about a 'uniform for living' but also how to mix that with dressing for mood, fun, imaginary lives etc. Most everything is opped and customised - and I love the thought of being a ghost of self-pleasing shape.
I just want to do it like a ghost in a shape that I like.” Me too. I only wear shoes I can walk in. Black New Balance sneakers have inspired a whole new look pulled together with clothes that feel right against my skin.
It's high time we look deeper into the the meaning intention, the heart and soul, rather than the outer shell., the presentation if you will. We need to think more about who we are and how we want to show up in much more meaningful way than what we are wearing. Good on you!
You might really like both of the Charlie Porter books, which are about exactly this! And he's a delight to read ... (also, thanks for the paid sub! totally unnecessary but deeply appreciated).
I love everything about this. Your memories, provocations, mournfulness, the segues that go round and round, the peace finally arrived at... everything.
Thank you for this intimate story. It reminded me of reading “Love, Loss and What I Wore” by Ilene Beckerman. My mother has dementia now (93), but I can always tell when she is having a good day, because she comments on what I’m wearing - a lifelong habit. Of course, sometimes I wear outrageous clothes to visit to elicit a reaction, but most of the time it is just my usual “shape in the world”.
Oh the temptation to wear outrageous outfits! I love that. Dementia is so hard. I didn't have to deal with that, although a lifetime of her mental illness brought its own challenges. All the good thoughts to you in this challenge ...
“Making as thinking.” Yes. I’ve been thinking (haha) a lot about this over the last several months. The activities that subvert the streamlining and efficiency that capitalism so desperately needs more of.
The idea of a "seamless" life is so horrific to me. It's where we rub up against the things of the world, and against one another, that make life interesting and complex and ... I'd argue, that's where the love is.
Thank you for this piece. Making as thinking in any form, be it in the garden, kitchen, or sewing space, is my version of pleasure in life at this time.

I would like a refund. I did not intend to sign up for a subscription. I see where now I cannot get a refund for this erroneous charge to my card.
I sent you an email -- please confirm that I have the correct person and I'll unsubscribe you from this end.
Let me figure out how to do that!

Thank you and truly my pleasure!
Love this! Clothing as statement, as memory, as a journey to self. Beautiful writing, Charlotte.
Thanks friend!
Good for you. “I made myself the shape in space that I want to be” can’t argue. Please don’t change.
Oh, and good luck with the algorithm- you’ll get there.

Thanks Cary -- this is a slightly new approach for me, so I'm glad it's hitting ...
